Pears - more information

Our selection of Pear trees for sale are suited to the British climate. Most of them have been bred in the UK, along with a few varieties from the continent that have proved to grow well in the UK.

Available on moderate vigour Quince A and semi dwarf Quince C rootstocks. On these rootstocks pears will start to fruit early after planting. Pears will grow well in a well drained but moisture retentive soil. If to be planted into a light dry soil the addition of organic matter into the surrounding soil will be beneficial.

The Pear trees offered for sale are all dessert varieties apart from one, Worcester Black - a culinary variety, which remains hard well into the new year and needs cooking to soften up. To really enjoy eating a dessert pear pick early! Pick when just turning yellowish green and the flesh firm but springy - you will have juicy excellently flavoured fruits. If picked when ripe on the outside they will often be soft and mushy on the inside. Pears ripen best off the tree in storage.

Pear trees flower early mainly during April, and require a long summer to ripen properly. Consequently most commercial pears are grown in south east England. When choosing pear trees to buy, to get the most out of them they need a sheltered position and plenty of sunshine. With this in mind they can be grown well in northern situations.

Though some texts say that some pears are self fertile it is always best to have another tree or trees around for good pollination of the same or adjacent pollination groups. The group for each variety is detailed above.
